College/Department Information

 

The Augusta University School of Public Health was established in 2023 to address Georgia's distinct public health challenges through exceptional education, innovative research, and collaborative community engagement. We are leveraging the strengths of Georgia's only public academic medical center, combining public health expertise with clinical knowledge to train future public health leaders. Our school is comprised of three academic departments: Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Data Science, Community & Behavioral Health Sciences, and Health Management, Economics & Policy. We offer a variety of degree programs, from specialized master's options to doctoral programs that create the next generation of public health researchers. Our research mission is critical to our long-term impact; we strongly emphasize scholarly productivity through peer-reviewed publications, scientific presentations, and grant-funded projects. Annually, we attract more than $6M in extramural funding.

Job Summary

 

The Fellow will work closely with the Principal Investigator and will play a central role in developing and analyzing a knowledge base of research-quality information. Responsibilities will include coordinating knowledgebase development, creating systematically harvested research datasets, developing computable knowledge modules, and conducting wide-ranging analyses of the collected information. The Fellow will contribute to the identification and characterization of research defects and to the development and evaluation of evidence-based approaches for preventing them.

Responsibilities

 

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

                

Knowledge Base Development and Management 

Coordinate the development, organization, quality control, and refinement of a research-quality knowledge base, including the identification, classification, characterization, and documentation of defects in biomedical research. 

Development and Evaluation of Defect-Prevention Approaches

Contribute to the development, testing, and evaluation of evidence-based approaches, tools, protocols, checklists, and recommendations intended to prevent or reduce defects in biomedical research.

Research Analysis and Interpretation

Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses of collected information to identify patterns, risk factors, relationships, and trends associated with defects in biomedical research. Interpret findings in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and research team.

Computable Knowledge Development

Develop and refine computable knowledge modules, ontologies, coding structures, and related computational representations to facilitate systematic analysis, retrieval, integration, and reuse of research-quality information.

Systematic Data Collection and Dataset Development

Identify, retrieve, systematically harvest, curate, and organize published and other relevant research information to develop structured datasets concerning research defects, their risk factors, consequences, and potential prevention strategies

Scientific Communication and Dissemination 

Prepare research findings, datasets, analyses, figures, reports, manuscripts, presentations, and other scientific materials for dissemination through peer-reviewed publications, scientific conferences, and other appropriate venues

Required Qualifications

 

Educational Requirements

Ph.D. or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university

Preferred Qualifications

 

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with biomedical research is highly desirable, and experience with computing, data science, information systems, programming, or computational approaches to research is an advantage. The position is particularly well suited to an investigator interested in research methodology, scientific rigor and reproducibility, biomedical informatics, data analysis, or the responsible and effective conduct of research.

ABILITIES

Ability to complete work and to meet deadlines. Willingness and ability to work with research animals. Ability to work independently with only general supervision.

KNOWLEDGE

Good organizational skills, detail-oriented and ability to prioritize tasks. Basic competency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and EndNote or willingness to learn.

SKILLS

Have strong analytical and research skills. Computer programming skills are not required but represent advantage. Good oral and written communication skills.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

 

Shift: Days/M-F (work outside of the normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)

Salary Minimum: 

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position)
