Job Description

Position Duties
The employee will assist primarily with data analyses to support the Coastal & Fluvial Sediments Lab in Corvallis, OR (OSU Campus). The research team led by Dr. Eidam studies sediment transport processes and deposition through fluvial and coastal environments using diverse oceanographic tools.

This posting is for a student researcher who will primarily assist with post-processing of marine sediment cores, including subsampling, drying, crushing, weighing, and combusting sediments, running automated grain-size analyses, and doing chemistry lab acid digestion work to extract Pb-210 isotopes.

Additional duties may include organizing samples, assisting with lab cleanup and organization, constructing small sensors, data entry, and preparation of data for archival submissions. Little to no field work is expected for this position except for occasional field instrument tests. Student will be expected to complete and comply with all required safety trainings and procedures concerning use of chemicals and chemical facilities. Student is expected to maintain regular contact with supervisor and keep organized and complete notes on sample analyses.

Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
Strong proficiency in MS Excel
Ability to work well independently and interface with a team of early to midcareer scientists
Strong work ethic
Strong attention to detail and organization skills, especially with data management
Excellent communication and documentation skills
Proficiency in written and spoken English
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
Proficiency in Matlab and/or Python
Pursuing an undergraduate degree in Oceanography or Geology
