Position Summary

The SPD Educator is responsible for education and Quality Assessments of City of Hope’s Sterile Processing Program according to IAHCSMM, CBSPD, AORN, AAMI, and Joint Commission regulations. This position will maintain consistent high standards in the training and education process of all personnel responsible for sterile processing functions to assure that the department will meet regulatory requirements. This position will function across the City of Hope Enterprise and will require intermittent travel to community practice locations.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Provides recommendations to ensure the standards of operation of the department comply with the standards set by regulatory agencies
  • Plans, develops, and conducts training for onboarding and ongoing staff development in all areas involved with transport, cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and storage of instruments and medical devices. Develops and manages training programs for both inpatient and ambulatory care facilities
  • Assesses the learning needs of staff to plan, organize, coordinate and participate in development and/or teaching of programs to meet those identified needs
  • Provides annual staff education and maintains competency records
  • Develops and implements departmental performance improvement activities and assures ongoing staff participation
  • Develops, reviews, and revises standards of care, policies, procedures, practice guidelines, and protocols of care to reflect current evidence based practice and changing technology
  • Maintains continued education in the field of Sterile Processing operations and equipment through education, literature and seminars
  • Provides training and education to staff to prepare them for the national certification examinations
  • Provides instructions and in-services for new products, procedures and equipment in a manner that will identify and prevent resource loss and maintain safety
  • Acts as a leader in developing, monitoring, evaluating and helping to establish and improve practice standards
  • Acts as a resource for staff regarding critical thinking, equipment use and problem solving regarding clinical situations
  • Collaborates with Quality and Risk and with Infection Control to ensure new protocols are implemented timely and assure quality standards are maintained
  • Participates in and fosters a performance improvement approach that includes both intradepartmental and interdepartmental activities
  • Traveling to community practice sites up to 20% of worktime

Your qualifications should include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent required.Experience may substitute
  • Must have 5 years of recent experience working in a sterile processing department or perioperative environment
  • Demonstrated formal leadership or education role (leading, planning, controlling and evaluating sterile processing practices and operations)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic technique, surgical instrumentation and equipment, and practice of infection control techniques, and body mechanics
  • Demonstrated teaching/education/in-service skills
  • Must have CRCST certification.
  • Must have (or obtain within 12 months) CER certification
  • Valid California Driver’s License
  • Pay Range: $56.36 - $90.17 per hour.
