What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a department manager (Manager, R&D Science and Engineering) to lead the Scalable Modeling and Analysis Systems Department to cultivate its robust research program and deliver innovative results to core customers (Advanced Science Computing Research (ASCR), Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program, Nuclear Deterrence programs) and other program portfolios. You will have a broad range of technical, programmatic, and personnel management responsibilities including ensuring that the team is diverse, robust, agile, and well suited for all the department's technical challenges. You will have the opportunity to continue to expand the team and to seek opportunities for your staff to develop their careers.

You will work with the department’s and center’s staff as well as our internal and external customers to set the research and development agenda, support internal and external program development, prioritize activities, and enable high-quality execution of the department’s R&D. The department’s activities are strongly linked to organizations across the laboratory in both Livermore and Albuquerque including computing and application specific centers, which necessitates solid relationship building with leadership in those centers as well as with the rest of the center, Computation and Analysis for National Security -ORG 8700.

Your responsibilities as the Scalable Modeling and Analysis Systems Department Manager will include:

  • Leading department-level planning and communication with Sandia program managers for R&D projects focused on scalable high-performance computing: spanning modeling, analysis, and emerging HPC activities in support of Sandia’s multi-disciplinary engineering and scientific computing needs. Key programs of interest include ASC, ASCR, and the Nuclear Deterrence programs
  • Jointly managing SNL’s portfolio of high-performance computing modeling, analysis, and emerging HPC capabilities with partner managers in centers across sites (Livermore and Albuquerque)
  • Assuring program execution (department-level program budgets, staffing, and deliverables) and addressing performance and execution gaps
  • Managing the day-to-day operational, technical, and administrative responsibilities of the department
  • Providing oversight of security and need-to-know management procedures spanning open through classified work
  • Engaging technically across the department to understand and represent the work

The selected applicant can be a remote worker located in any U.S. State or District of Columbia. Regular or periodic travel to your assigned work location may be required.

Salary Range:

$178,300 - $302,900

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, physical science, or relevant discipline plus four or more years of relevant experience
  • Record of scientific contribution and innovation
  • Ability to travel monthly (potentially more if working remote)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • PhD in engineering, computer science, other physical science, or similar technical field
  • Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience
  • Strong oral and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build diverse, successful teams
  • Experience leading large and diverse teams and successful program development
  • Expertise in high performance computing modeling, analysis, and/or co-design R&D
  • Expertise in engineering science workflow R&D
  • Experience developing and using massively parallel codes
  • Knowledge of the U.S. nuclear deterrence program
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance

About Our Team:

Center 8700, Computation and Analysis for National Security, anticipates and reduces national security risks through developing and applying cross-domain computational and analytical capabilities. We contribute to all Sandia’s missions to advance our capabilities for today and tomorrow’s Nuclear Deterrence needs. Our work spans foundational research to development to application with deployment and engineering missions shaping our expertise. The Center stewards’ capabilities in engineering sciences, codes, models, data analytics, computing, information, and mathematical sciences, and agile component and systems design, and cyber and intelligence science.

The Scalable Modeling & Analysis Systems department has a research and development focus on massively scalable modeling and analysis systems for scientific computing, engineering sciences, and complex systems. Focus areas include fundamental high performance computing system research and development on resilience for high performance computing, novel programming models, and macro-scale system performance modeling, all aimed at developing massively scalable capabilities and research and development on engineering sciences workflows, including leading the SAW (Sandia Analysis Workflow) product development and IWF (Integrated Workflow) project.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
