Patient Safety Assistant

The Patient Safety Assistant is an individual who possess the skills and knowledge necessary to provide one-on-one safety assistance for patient whom alternatives or restraints may not be adequate or appropriate.This is either in the form of 1:1 sitting with the patient or virtual sitting.

This position will provide continuous observation and/or surveillance of patient needing monitoring.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Provides accurate, reliable, courteous and timely services to all customers.
  • Delivers only the following patient care in a manner consistent with the scope of practice of their discipline and the standards established by City of Hope as expressed in the plans for provision of
  • care and policies and procedures, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse:
  • Observes the patient continuously with the patient in full view.
  • Ensure that patient does not pull or dislodge lines, tubes, & dressing
  • Assist patient up to the commode and/or bathroom
  • Assist with turning and Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) with PCA presence in patient room.
  • Assist in re-orienting confused/disoriented patients as needed.
  • Never leaves the patient-utilizes the call light in the patient room for all relief or assistance as needed.
  • Provides diversional activity for the patient as appropriate, i.e., card playing, conversation,
  • reading, music, DVD’s etc.
  • Demonstrates competence to their role and function in high risk or problem prone behaviors.
  • Maintains current knowledge and awareness of organizational and regulatory standards, policies and procedures that pertain to this position.
  • Participates in a collaborative, empowered work environment as demonstrated through teamwork.
  • Effectively communicates with all customers and team members to meet organizational goals and to provide customer satisfaction.
  • Maintains current knowledge and skills through attendance and participation in organizations and departmental meetings and continuing education activities as applicable.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by appropriate and timely use of organizational resources.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement activities to continuously improve service delivery.
  • Demonstrates City of Hope values in individual work performance.

When applicable:

  • Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the patient monitoring device.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill necessary to provide appropriate care to patient population requiring video monitoring.
  • Verbally redirects patient over digital 2-way audio device that is in patient room. Immediately summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance.
  • Wears headset at all times and verbally redirects patient using the digital 2-way audio feature.
  • Maintains visual observation at all times whether in room or on monitor.
  • Provides prompt notification of appropriate clinical staff if patient requires assistance.
  • Participates in report with oncoming or off going staff when arriving for shift and upon completion of shift. Reviews pertinent information and behaviors.
  • Seek immediate help or advice as soon as possible when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others.
  • Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues.
  • Monitors for and maintains patient environmental safety. Notifies clinical staff of potential safety hazards.
  • Demonstrates a safe work practices and attitude.

Expectations while on duty:

  • Dedicated attention to observing patients with no outside distractions. No personal cell phone use.
  • Never leave monitor station unattended. If you need to step away, call for backup first.
  • No food and/or drink in patient care areas.
  • Keep your workspace clean and tidy.
  • Maintain documentation.

Your qualifications should include:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • 6 months patient care experience or experience working in a healthcareenvironment.
  • Patient Monitoring Device (where applicable)
  • AHA BLS Certification

Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $21.22 - $25.46 / hour

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
