Job Summary:
Are you passionate about high-quality data displays, web and API development, and contributing to a growing weather network? The University of Wisconsin is building the Wisconsin Environmental Mesonet (Wisconet) - a network of weather and soil monitoring stations across the state of Wisconsin - and we are looking to hire a full-stack developer to engineer solutions supporting Wisconet (wisconet.wisc.edu). We collect thousands of data points every hour used to support farmers and growers, meteorologists and scientists, and the people of the state. It's an important mission that requires a high-functioning platform, and that's where you come in.

You'll be developing intuitive and interactive data displays, supporting the infrastructure that delivers our data to the global meteorology community, and helping Wisconet reach the people of Wisconsin.

The successful candidate is required to be well-versed in front-end development and have some experience with back-end coding languages, systems and processes. Also, the candidate needs to be a team player with a clear understanding of user-experience (UX) and user-centered design.

Responsibilities:
Leads and participates in the design, development, layout, coding, maintenance, and support of websites and applications to meet the needs of functional users. Designs, develops, and deploys custom interactive web applications and integrates logically designed databases.
10% Evaluates and implements open source and commercial products to meet project needs
25% Designs, develops, and deploys web applications and integrate databases based on relevant website coding scripts
15% Serves as a subject matter expert, consultant, and main point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding website and application options, design, maintenance, and support
15% Investigates, resolves, and recommends solutions to website problems and performance issues such as speed of access
15% Contributes to website strategy and recommends changes to leadership
20% Monitors website use and trends, status of projects, and reviews work for completion/quality

Education:
Required
Associate's Degree in Web Development or other related field

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Sciences, Application Development, or other related fields

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in Web Development
- At least three years of experience in web applications development
- Proficiency with user-experience (UX) and user-centered design
- Proficiency with multiple front-end languages (JavaScript, HTML, CSS) and their libraries
- Experience with one or more back-end languages (Python, C#, PHP, Ruby) and their libraries
- Experience with JS frameworks such as React, Vue.js, Angular, or Ember.js
- Experience with RESTful APIs
- Experience with database technologies such as MySQL, Oracle, and MongoDB
- Strong aptitude for troubleshooting and problem solving

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Sciences, Application Development, or other related fields
- Experience with versioning applications such as Git or SVN
- Experience with frontend mapping tools such as MapBox, GoogleMaps, ArcGIS
- Experience with frontend data visualization tools such as D3, Highcharts a plus
- Experience with Python analysis tools such as MetPy, Plotly, Pandas a plus
- Excellent verbal and communication skills
- Strong interest in learning new tools, languages, philosophies, and workflows
- A strong interest in weather or environmental data
- Demonstratable understanding of scientific processes and data analysis
