Job Description

The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility seeks an Assistant Computer Scientist to work on porting and optimizing HPC simulation and scientific machine learning applications on diverse hardware systems including Polaris, Aurora, and accelerators in AI Testbed. 

In this role you can expect to:

  • Port and optimize HPC simulation kernels, codes, and scientific machine learning applications to diverse AI systems, and contribute to the design of future supercomputers and AI accelerators to meet the needs of these applications.
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary environment that will offer opportunities to interact with a wide range of talents from the whole spectrum of HPC research.
  • Present and publish your work at major symposia and in relevant journals.
  • Conduct research and development in computational science and machine learning, with emphasis on developing software to combine simulation and AI in performance-oriented solutions on large-scale supercomputers.
  • Contribute to discovery and technological advances in application science, with emphasis on the applications of exascale (and beyond) computer architectures.
  • Strengthen your career path opportunities by applying new techniques, developing independent research capabilities and building professional skills such as communication, networking and leadership.
  • Work closely with industry, national lab and universities on the design of current and future systems to meet the AI for science mission

This is a long-term temporary employment opportunity; the initial duration is one year and could possibly be extended.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum of a PhD in computer science, computer engineering, computational science, or a related field.
  • Experience with applications in one or more scientific areas.
  • Experience with large-scale parallel applications using MPI.
  • Experience with machine learning and deep learning frameworks, including PyTorch and TensorFlow.
  • Experience in GPU and accelerated computing, including reduced precision.
  • Experience related to parallel algorithms, I/O architectures, or performance evaluation and tuning.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values: impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
