Summary

The Lloyd Lab at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a Research Assistant I. This laboratory performs basic and clinical research related to roles of enteroviruses in Type 1 Diabetes and Celiac disease, RNA granule formation in cells and the molecular biology of enterovirus cell-host intereactions. This researcher will be mostly involved in the celiac disease and Type 1 Diabetes projects that are part of the international TEDDY study (https://teddy.epi.usf.edu), but will also support Postdoctoral Fellows in their focused molecular biology experimental research projects. The Research Assistant will also assist in the running and organization of the lab and perform a variety of experimental procedures. 

Job Duties

  • Perform highly reproducible qRT-PCR analysis of clinical samples with detailed record keeping. 
  • Perform mammalian cell culture. 
  • Perform experiments using molecular biology technologies, viral and bacterial cultivation and basic bioinformatics.
  • Participate in lab meetings and read applicable literature. 
  • Prepare figures and assist in writing related to experiments performed. 
  • Maintain lab supplies and inventory (ordering, stocking, preparing solutions/media).
  • Maintain general lab environment, including, but not limited to, equipment maintenance and repairs, organization and cleanliness of the lab.
  • Maintain and ensure compliance with biosafety and laboratory regulations. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in basic science or a related field.
  • Advanced degree and experience in clinical PCR or virology research.
  • 3-4 years of directly related lab work experience, post-graduation.
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques, excellent aseptic technique and general skills common to a microbiology lab are a must.
  • Strong documentation and organization skills with the ability to keep accurate records of all work performed. 
  • Good analytical and computer skills. 
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new techniques with instruction.
  • 3-4 years relevant work experience (post-education) with clinical samples is critical.
