About the Department:

The College of Public Health at George Mason University comprises four academic units in addition to Social Work: Global and Community Health; Health Administration and Policy; Nursing; and Nutrition and Food Studies, fielding a variety of graduate and undergraduate programs (BS through PhD). The College has seven academic programs that are externally accredited and is home to more than 1,900 undergraduate and 950 graduate students and approximately 140 faculty and staff. The Equitable and Accessible Software to Detect Injuries (EAS-ID) Project was created to address the disparity in visualizing bruises on darker skin tones. Solving this problem has the potential to positively impact the lives and health outcomes for the millions of Americans with darker skin who are victims of violence annually in addition to many more millions across the world.

About the Position:

Responsible for software development activities for the Equitable and Accessible Software to Detect Injuries (EAS-ID) project, by closely working with PIs and other team members, and independently completing their own portions of work. They will work as part of the team developing a platform that integrates large structured, unstructured, and image data. The platform will need to operate in a secure environment, and be able to communicate with external systems through APIs.

Responsibilities:

Collaborates with a team of researchers, graduate students, and software developers to perform technical research, software design, and software engineering activities needed to build the platform. Specifically, the activities include software design, database design, software implementation, database implementation, system interoperability, and mobile platform integration;
Writes reports and software documentation; and
Participates in group meetings and related activities within the entire team.
Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, with considerable software development experience in one or more of the following areas:
Computer programming (Python, JavaScript, PHP), design and implementation of application programming interfaces (APIs), design of user interfaces, system implementation in mobile software and hardware
Full-stack development
JavaScript with React framework for front-end development
Back-end development, APIs
High-performance database development
Strong technical skills and ability to work in Linux and cloud environments.
Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; and
Knowledge of deep neural networks and computer vision, design and implementation of database systems, server-based and cloud environments, computer security and patient privacy, and EHR data integration.
