Job Description
Optical technologies fundamentally serve a pervasive role in the next-generation human-centered intelligent and interactive systems, including advanced optical sensing and imaging technologies, human-centric display and human interface technologies, as well as machine vision and computing technologies. The Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona aims to create excellence in the area of human-centered intelligent and interactive systems and establish a vertically integrated hub for scientists of all disciplines to collaborate and innovate.To accomplish this mission, The Wyant College of Optical Sciences is seeking talented applicants to fill a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the field of optical engineering, specializing in 3D display and imaging technologies. Applicants should have a strong track record of research and publication in one or multiple of the following fields: 3D display and imaging technologies, augmented and virtual reality systems and applications, human-computer interaction and perception with intelligent systems, computational imaging and display systems, or machine vision and artificial intelligence. Strong skills in optical system design and instrumentation, advanced imaging or display system integration, or programming skills are highly valued. Experience in machine learning algorithms is a plus.
Under the supervision of the PIs, highly self-motivated individuals will work with a diverse group of graduate students and faculty to develop and test 3D imaging and display systems and human-computer interfaces. The successful candidate will support research efforts in building a complex human-centric intelligent system testbed integrated with advanced optical imaging and sensing technologies, 2D and 3D displays, human-interface technologies, as well as computing technologies. The successful candidate should be a highly motivated and creative researcher capable of solving challenging problems and collaborating with a dynamic team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
*Design and build a core hardware infrastructure which integrates essential capabilities of sensing and capture, display and interface, and underlying software for data management, user interface, and information abstraction.
*Design and develop testbed application examples in the fields of education, healthcare, engineering, collaboration, to demonstrate the core capabilities of the hardware infrastructure.
*Develop novel imaging and display capabilities for future human-centric display and interactive systems and application platforms.
*Write scientific papers and technical reports.
*Contribute to the expansion of a research program investigating human-centric intelligent systems and applications.
Applicants should have a strong track record of research and publication in one or multiple of the following fields: 3D display and imaging technologies, augmented and virtual reality systems and applications, human-computer interaction and perception with intelligent systems, computational imaging and display systems, or machine vision and artificial intelligence. Strong skills in optical system design and instrumentation, advanced imaging or display system integration, or programming skills are highly valued. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience with machine learning algorithms is a plus. Familiarity with augmented and virtual reality. Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
Minimum Qualifications:
*A PhD in optical engineering, physics, computer science, electrical engineering or a related field completed within the past 5 years.
*Demonstrated experience in cross-disciplinary research.
*Strong academic and research background related to 3D display and imaging technologies and excellent problem-solving skills.
* A demonstrated background in productive and creative research efforts.
Preferred Qualifications:
*Experience with advanced imaging, display and interface technology integration.
*Extensive experiences with software and programming languages such as Python, , MATLAB, C++.
*Experiences with machine learning algorithms.
*Experience with optical system design and modeling.
