Summary

The Sr. Health Education Specialist within the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center works in coordination with the Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) Program to plan, coordinate and implement project activities within the scope of COE’s mandate: to establish and cultivate cancer-specific community outreach and education programming to increase awareness in cancer screening, intervention, and research. The Sr. Health Education Specialist assists in establishing relationships and supporting outreach activities within DLDCCC’s catchment area, including engagement and involvement of underrepresented, lower socioeconomic, and rural patients, as well as with faith-based and community organizations.

 

The ideal candidate must be able to manage competing priorities, deadlines and projects while maintaining a high quality work product through supporting regulatory maintenance of active oncology clinical trials within an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center housed within the BCM academic medical center matrix.  Must also be sufficiently computer-literate and possess the necessary organizational skills and attention to detail to learn and master the functionality and workflow processes.

Job Duties

  • Develops & maintains community relationships.
  • Oversees community outreach activities specific to cancer education, prevention and clinical trial participation. 
  • Works in concert with the Associate Director of COE to connect researchers with populations within the catchment area to facilitate community engagement in research aims.  
  • Responsible for generating formats and reports to document achievement of program milestones. 
  • Collaborates with other DLDCCC programs to plan community engagement aspects of symposia.
  • Collaborates with researchers/investigators in preparation for community-facing presentations. 
  • Works with the AD of COE to plans educational programming to increase understanding of research and clinical trial participation within the community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Education, Public Health, Community Health, Behavioral Science or a related field.
  • Four years of relevant experience.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Community Outreach and Engagement and health equity, coordinating and managing community-facing health programs.
  • Experience with community education and outreach experience in diverse communities.
