Position Summary

The Pharmacy Supervisor is a licensed pharmacist with knowledge and proficiency in pharmacy practice and pharmacy administration. The incumbent is responsible for the professional and administrative management of an assigned area in pharmacy operations service, to include day to day operation. The incumbent is also responsible for supervising multiple pharmacy staff members.

The Supervisor is a part of the Pharmacy Operations management team. The Supervisor will have pharmacist staffing responsibilities as well as be responsible for the supervision and coordination of daily work activities of pharmacy staff members schedules and assignments. The Supervisor serves as a resource to the assigned staff regarding specific skill demonstration, promotion of knowledge, communication and will be expected to provide ongoing education, coaching and mentorship.

Key Responsibilities include:

Provision of Pharmacy Services:

• Responsible for reviewing medication orders for appropriateness, processing, and dispensing medications in accordance to organizational requirements.
• Checks products in the sterile and non-sterile areas.
• Monitors treatments and provides timely follow-up on the clinical effects of the medication regimen with recommendation for adjustments as necessary to achieve optimal outcomes and documents actions.
• When appropriate, approves new drug orders, which may include checking/verifying chemotherapy notes, and processing non-formulary requests.
• Screens for drug-drug, drug-herb/dietary supplement, drug-allergy, drug-food, drug-disease state and drug-laboratory interactions.
• Performs pharmacokinetic drug monitoring on individual patients
• Provides education to providers and patients and care giver as needed
• Prevents, detects, manages, and documents adverse drug reactions to minimize adverse events in patients
• Serves as a drug information resource for other members of the multidisciplinary team

Quality and Process improvement:

• Collaborates with Pharmacy Leadership to develop, implement, and maintain systems that promote safe, effective, and efficient processes
• Develop and ensure adherence to policies and procedures for operational areas including controlled substances, Automated Dispensing Cabinets, Compounding areas, distribution and logistics, and other patient care areas
• Closely measure and track quality assurance metrics in the assigned area and report trending data to the pharmacy executive leadership team
• Under the direction of pharmacy medication safety officer promote just culture and culture of medication safety and timely address medication errors and near misses and ensure that system issues resulting in those medication errors are resolved.
• Develop standard work processes and staff education to address system gaps
• Maintains all required licenses, certifications, competencies as staff pharmacists.
• Assists the Pharmacy executive leadership team with management of drug shortages.
• Supports reporting of Pharmacy Interventions, Adverse Drug Reactions, and Medication Errors for the institution
• Assists with quality improvement projects and continuously assess the effectiveness of the area by monitoring performance metrics.

Administrative Responsibilities:

• Provides oversight of staff in the assigned area and develop, document and evaluate the competence and completes annual evaluation for assigned staff members
• Administer progressive discipline when appropriate and collaborate with HR on that process
• Maintain safe medication practices in accordance with best practice and most up to date clinical guidelines.
• Maintains and promotes understanding of 340b practices when applicable
• Understands non-formulary and prior authorization policies and practices
• Under the direction of the pharmacy executive leadership team, participates in cost-saving and/or revenue-generating activities while ensuring safe quality care.
• Assist with interviewing, hiring, orientation, and discipline.

Education, mentoring and Professional Development:

• Guides staff in appropriate practice management, time management, customer service, collaboration, and communication.
• Actively participates in the education and development of assigned staff, residents and pharmacy students.
• Provides education to health care providers, including physicians, nurses, as needed
• Committed to personal growth and development
• Involvement in National or Local Professional Organizations such as ASHP, HOPA, ASCO, ASH, CSHP, CPHA, etc
• Seeks opportunities for self and subordinates to participate in research activities, publishing, and presenting at local and national meetings
• Maintains current knowledge, skills and competencies through involvement in professional continuing education activities.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

• Graduate of ACPE-accredited Pharmacy School;
• Pharmacy Practice Residency (PGY 1) and at least 1 year of experience as a pharmacist in a Hospital setting OR
• At least 3 years of experience as a pharmacist in a Hospital setting
• Current CA Pharmacist License
• BLS – American Heart Association or obtain within 90 days of hire date

Pref. Certification/Licensure:

• Pharm D
• Board Certification in Oncology or Pharmacotherapy

Preferred Experience:

• Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role
