About Radiation Therapy - Duarte

The Department of Radiation Oncology in Duarte at City of Hope brings an array of innovative technologies, protocols, and research procedures. Our Radiation Therapists are exposed to challenging, interesting, and exciting new treatment technologies. Our skilled therapists work on state-of-the-art machines and procedures that save lives: Tomotherapy, RefleXion, Truebeam, Identity, and Vision RT surface guidance technology as well as HDR, brachytherapy, clinical trial patients, disease-focused specialty practice, to name a few. The RefleXion unit uses advanced technology with a radiopharmaceutical agent that cancer cells absorb creating a biological beacon for targeted radiation treatments. Construction has begun to install a Varian Ethos unit; Ethos is a new revolutionary therapy machine that uses adaptive Radiation Therapy that combines artificial intelligence with adaptive therapy allowing physicians to make daily adjustments in a patient’s treatment in real-time based on the cancer’s response. These innovations in technology help cultivate a higher level skill set, being unique to only Radiation Therapists at COH Duarte.

Position Summary

Provides radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by physician according to established standards and practices. Therapy may contain of any or all the following procedures: IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy), SRS (Stereotactic Radiation Surgery), SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy), TBI (Total Body Irradiation Therapy), TBE (Total Body Skin Electrons Therapy), High Dose Rate Brachytherapy and CT based simulation. Provides clinical instruction to students.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Delivers a prescribed and planned course of radiation therapy to patients of all ages.
  • Reinforces recommendations given to patient by healthcare professional concerning reaction to treatment and care of radiated area, prevention, or treatment of generalized and local side effects
  • Performs simulation procedures as prescribed by physician and assist in dosimetry procedures
  • Assists in research and development directly related to departmental services
  • Performs daily quality assurance checks on linear accelerators, reporting any variation in morning warm-up. Reports improper equipment operation to appropriate personnel
  • Completes billings for patient treatments, setups, and simulations.
  • Aides in the training of radiation therapy students
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, attending in-service meetings and workshops
  • Attends meetings as required
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Minimum Education:
    • High School or equivalent
    • Post High School Vocational/Specialized Training in an accredited Radiation Therapy Education Program
  • Minimum Experience:
    • 0-3 years of related experience, depending on training

Required Courses/Training:

  • Graduate of an accredited radiologic technology course plus radiation therapy course OR
  • Graduate of an accredited Bachelor of Science in Radiation Therapy Program

Required Certification/Training:

  • Licensed by the California State Department of Health (Certified in Radiation Therapy)
  • Registration by ARRT plus 24 months course in radiologic technology
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification (adult and pediatric)

  • $10,000 sign on bonus

Pay Rate: $48.30 - $77.28 / hour

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
