As a Mental Health Specialist, you will provide direct patient care under the direction of the RN. You will facilitate structured programming based on milieu needs for pediatric patients. You will participate and share observations in the interdisciplinary team and assist in milieu management.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans and organizes group programming, including but not limited gross motor, psycho-educational and recreational groups focused on patients’ individual and collective needs under the supervision of the Therapeutic Program Coordinator.
  • Provide a caring, warm environment for patients through setting clear boundaries, supporting, encouraging, and comfortably interacting to help build self-esteem, age appropriate interpersonal skills, positive thinking, problem solving, social cues and language, coping skills, respect for others and self.
  • Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary treatment team by contributing clinical information and observations about patients.
  • Communicates in a non-judgmental manner, uses effective listening techniques and demonstrates abilities to acknowledge and reflects back to the speaker, paraphrase, and use open-ended questions.
  • Documents and describes patient behavior, interventions and patients response to interventions in Epic.

Education:

  • Bachelor Degree in Humanities; such as,   Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child Development. 

Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA).
  • NAPPI (completion within the New Hire Period).

Complexity of Work:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of lifespan development, abnormal psychology, therapeutic process, growth and development, behavioral management and therapeutic relationships.
  • Relate professionally, ethically, and compassionately to patients, families and staff.
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

  • Previous mental health experience strongly preferred;
  • Experience in group facilitation strongly preferred.
  • Maintains general knowledge of CBT, DBT, and trauma informed care and related interventions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
