Position Summary

The Clinical Pharmacist II (CPII) is a licensed professional with the ability to review research protocols and extract pertinent information to function at the highest level of clinical practice. The CPII will work as part of the multidisciplinary health care team to directly care for patients enrolled in COH clinical trials. As the clinical investigational pharmacist, he/she will take ownership of workflows and processes for research patients and help implement, document, and monitor comprehensive medication management (CMM) and therapeutic care plans through direct interactions with patients and providers to achieve positive patient-centered outcomes.

The individual will be able to supervise technician staff, oversee investigational drug use processes, and assist leadership in the operational aspects of the department or unit. This individual actively works to ensure optimal and compliant delivery of pharmaceutical care and service, particularly in relation to research protocols and investigational drug therapies.  Additionally, they will assist in performance improvement initiatives, either through direct involvement and membership or by occasionally leading team efforts. He/she provides input into and is expected to meet budget, revenue and expense targets. The pharmacist will be the research pharmacy representation across multiple disease teams and clinical committees/meeting as required. It is expected that the individual who holds this position is able to actively participate with peers, subordinates, and supervisors in constructive problem solving, as well as, to facilitate collaborative relationship within and external to the pharmacy department.

The Hybrid CIDS/IDSA role will have oversight and maintenance of all COH investigational medications, including the ability to account for each dose of medication received, dispensed, disposed, transferred or returned to the pharmaceutical sponsor. The pharmacist is responsible for the operational support of IDS services, support of IDSA pharmacists, oversight of all IDS technician duties, understanding clinical trial design, adhering to Good Clinical Practice and compliance with local/state/federal requirements for investigational drugs.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provides comprehensive medication management services, coordinating all clinical pharmacy functions for patients enrolled in clinical trials to help achieve compliant, safe and per-protocol use of investigational drugs
  • Completes patient profile reviews and participates in huddles and meetings as an integrated member of the research team.
  • Application of established anti-neoplastic and immunomodulating medication use processes for investigational drugs
  • Reviews investigational medication regimens for appropriateness, contraindications, and potential interactions.
  • Ensures that he or she provides services that are accurate, reliable, courteous, and timely.
  • Serves as subject matter and clinical expert as related to investigational drug use.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of formal and informal drug education and clinical consultation to medical, nursing, and pharmacy staff in the form of in-services and continuing education programs within their area of practice.
  • Collaborates with pharmacy supervisors, leadership, and staff to develop policies, procedures, and processes for more efficient research processing within the pharmacy Enterprise and area of practice.
  • Serves as an authority on drug information; usage, interactions, dosages, and compliance to medical staff, nursing staff, technicians and students.
  • Assumes the duties of the Pharmacy Technician/Intern as needed to maintain efficient quality operation and timely service.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Graduate of ACPE-accredited Pharmacy School or School with ACPE accreditation pending         
  • PGY1 ad PGY2 residencies, or
  • PGY plus two years of experience as a clinical pharmacist, or
  • Five years of experience as a clinical pharmacist

             

             

Req. Certification/Licensure:     

  • Current CA Pharmacist License or within 3 months of hire
  • BLS (through American Heart Association) certification or receive one within 3 months of hire date.

             

Preferred Education:    

  • Pharm D

             

Preferred Courses/Training:

  • PGY-2 Residency, Board Certification
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP)

             

Pref. Certification/Licensure:    

  • CCRP Certification or equivalent

             

Preferred Experience:   

  • 3 years of experience working in an investigational drug service
  • 2 years of experience working in an oncology setting Pharmacy Research
