Job Description

The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory solicits applicants to fill a postdoctoral position in the Functional Coatings Group. The successful applicant will play a pivotal role in advancing a new project to apply thin film coating technology to develop improved membranes and sorbents for water treatment.  In particular, the new hire will use atomic layer deposition (ALD) and sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) to tailor the physical and chemical properties of polymer membranes and sorbents to improve the selectivity, efficiency, and anti-fouling capabilities of materials used in desalination and other water treatment functions.  The postdoctoral appointee will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary and multi-institutional team as part of the newly founded Collaborative Water-Energy Research Center (CoWERC).  In addition to materials synthesis, the postdoctoral appointee will perform characterization using a variety of methods including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as materials testing to evaluate properties such as selectivity, flux and lifetime.

  • This position requires a Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, or a related field with 0 to 3 years of experience.
  • Experience in atomic layer deposition, thin film coating equipment, and instrument design and construction.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience and skills needed to work independently and as part of a team, developing experimental plans, performing experiments, analyzing data, and contributing to the interpretation of results.
  • Must have experience contributing to the preparation of manuscripts for open-literature, peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific meetings based on research findings.
  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
